Tenerife, located in the magical Canary Islands, is dominated by majestic, inactive Mount Teide, the third largest volcano in the world. The island is a holiday haven, with idyllic weather conditions and a variety of resort activities, including spectacular black volcanic sand beaches, mountains and lush forests, excellent golfing opportunities and a lively nightlife. A holiday here is a relaxed one, with numerous natural sights to explore, and lots of sun, sea and sand - which is why Tenerife is such a popular tourist destination.
Tenerife is also one of the few places on earth where you laze in the sun on the beach while a volcanic snow-capped mountain looks over you. The island is also home to the UNESCO listed Teide National Park located on the volcanic slopes of Mount Teide.
The capital of the island is Santa Cruz de Tenerife, a lively port town whose port is where the first shots were fired at the beginning of the Spanish Civil War. Today it's a bustling mix of ferries, jetfoils and giant freighters that take passengers on a selection of fun cruises and ocean adventures. Once you have explored the town, there are many more you visit on this pretty little island, including La Orotava, Masca and Garchico, all of which are charming and worth spending time exploring.
