One of the most dynamic cities in the north of England, Newcastle, or Newcastle upon Tyne started out as an industrial city but it now a popular weekend hangout for the younger set. But aside from a vibrant nightlife, this riverside city located on the Tyne also boasts a long history, and it's particularly noted for the variety of architectural styles. In fact, it's been inhabited since Roman times and one of the highlights of a visit here is to explore these Roman ruins, as well as the neoclassical buildings in the old part of town, known as Grainger Town, which is located in the heart of the city.
Here you will find the ruins of Hadrian's Wall, and in complete contrast, the modern waterfront buildings in the new Quayside development, called the Sage Gateshead, which is home to some fine restaurants, noisy waterside bars, designer boutiques, modern art galleries and chic hotels. Somehow ancient and modern manage to marry comfortably in this lively riverside city, also home to the legendary Newcastle United Football Club.
Sport may be popular here, but culture is not forgotten, as the excellent museums and art galleries attest (one of the most famous is the Baltic Centre for Contemporary Art.) And then just outside Newcastle you'll find the picturesque countryside and coastline just waiting to be explored.
