Whereas Berlin is a more solemn German city, Munich is full of vibrance and fun. But it's not just Bavaria's home of beer festivals; this vibrant city, the third largest in Germany, is also very prosperous in its own right, with a number of top commercial companies based here, including the headquarters of BMW motor vehicles. Life is good in Munich, and there is some excellent shopping opportunities, a lively nightlife, and loads of history to explore here, including romantic palaces, superb museums and art galleries and, of course, lots of beer halls.
Munich is for its annual Oktoberfest beer festival, where vast amounts of beer is consumed along with lots of sausages. But people come here all year round, to enjoy its traditional charm and hospitality, called Gemutlichkeit in German, which translates to hearty, happy, healthy togetherness. But aside from all this hearty warmth, Munich is also a very sophisticated city and a joy to explore.
For some culture, head for the Alte Pinakothek Gallery where treasures by some of the greatest masters are on display. Science and technology abounds at the Deutsche Museum, and the historic buildings on Marienplatz are all worth exploring. For a more sober side of the city, visit the Dachau Memorial Site, where the first Nazi death camp was located, or enjoy the historic beauty of Nymphenburg Palace and, further afield, the charming Alpine village of Berchtesgaden.
