Before the jetset made it their playground in the 1920s, Miami was a relatively quiet seaside town. But today it's one of the most visited beach resorts in the United States. With its pretty pastel-coloured Art Deco buildings, golden beaches fringed by tall palm trees, turquoise sea and balmy weather, Miami is a thriving seaside town with lots of fun entertainment. In fact, many people come here to retire - and Miami is often used as a base from which to explore the Caribbean and Latin America. As a result, many cruise ships dock here en route to these exotic destinations.
The jetset flock to Coconut Grove to have fun, while those who have come for the sun, sea and sand enjoy Miami's beaches or head further afield to the kilometers of magnificent gold sand beaches located north of the city in the area aptly named the Gold Coast, or Miami Beach. Resorts located here include Fort Lauderdale, Palm Beach and Pompano Beach.
As the city is close to Cuba it has quite a large Cuban population, who live in an area called Little Havana. But that's just one of the attractions here. Families love Miami's entertainment, and you'll find lots of children and their parents enjoying a variety of attractions including Disneyland, the Seaquarium and Metrozoo. The city also boasts some excellent museums, located in a vast museum park in Biscayne Bay, including the Miami Art Museum, a new science museum, the Museum of Contemporary Art and the extraordinary New World Centre.
After dark Miami comes alive, and if you enjoy celebrity spotting, you're likely to see the rich and famous at play in the exclusive bars and clubs located here.
