The vibrant, cosmopolitan capital of the Philippines, Manila is located on the east coast of Luxon, the largest and most developed island in the Philippines and the most northerly. The city was originally founded on the site of a Muslim settlement in 1571 and boasts many fascinating historic sights.
Manila is the base from which one can explore the surrounding islands, as well as the island of Luxon itself. As a result, it's full of activity, with a selection of museums, libraries, theatres and shopping malls and a vibrant nightlife. It's a busy, crowded noisy place, home to the University of the Phillipines, which makes it a student hub with lots of lively activity.
Manila is actually made up of 17 different areas, each a municipality in its own right with its own personality. And to fully enjoy this pulsating city, one needs to explore these different areas. There's the ancient Spanish walled city called Intramuros, bustling Chinatown and Makati, with its modern shopping malls.
For a break from the noise and bustle of the city, head for Rizal Park, and don't forget to enjoy at least one magnificent sunset along the Bay of Manila that is best viewed from the waterfront. The fairytale effects are created by the high humidity combined with the cloud cover of the harbour and the sight is something you will never forget.
