Madrid's medieval quarter is quite magnificent - these buildings have been here since the 18th and 19th Centuries, and are now home to a variety of shops, bars, restaurants and art galleries, all worth visiting. But the most fun you'll have is sitting in an outdoor terraza enjoying something to drink,, and people watching after strolling along Plaza Mayor, the main street lined with charming arcaded shops.
To escape the bustle of the city, head for El Retiro Park where you can relax on a bench or row out on the lake. Madrid's rejuvenated riverfront area is also lots of fun, comprising 10km of pedestrian and cycling paths leading to a beach, an orchard, viewpoints and historical monuments.
