This fascinating city is the capital of Pakistan. Home to a number of excellent universities and full of beautiful shrines and mosques, Islamabad is a joy to explore. Its famous old city is a maze of narrow streets lined with bazaars and also home to the UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Badshahi Mosque. The city also boasts a number of excellent museums to explore, including the Central Museum, the Pakistan Museum of Natural History, the Lok Virsa Museum and the city's excellent National Art Gallery.
Islamabad is home to the country's Federal Government as well as one of the largest mosques in the world, the Shah Faisal Mosque, which is located in an idyllic setting with the Margalla Hills as its backdrop. As sightseeing here revolves around exploring the city's many mosques and shrines, make sure you include the Golra Sharif and Bari Imam, which are both located just outside of the city.
Islamabad boasts a number of lush green parks and gardens, ideal for relaxing and escaping the bustle of the city. One of the most popular is the Shalimar Gardens, while the Rose and Jasmine Garden is also spectacular, and the park at Rawal Lake is ideal for a picnic. For spectacular views of nature, head for Daman e Koh or Pir Sohawa, and if you have kids in tow, you'll enjoy the excellent facilities at the Japanese Park which is located close to Islamabad Zoo.
Islamabad is also an excellent base from which to explore the surrounding areas, including Swat and Kaghan Valleys and the northern areas of Gilgit, Hunza, Skardu and Chitral which are located in the Himalayan Mountains.
