When you visit the magnificent Scottish Highlands, Inverness is your base from which to explore them. And this busy city in Northern Scotland, located on the east coast at the mouth of the River Ness, is located in one of the most spectacular areas of the Highlands. Inverness is also near famous Loch Ness, mysterious home to the legendary Loch Ness Monster, which is another good reason to visit this beautiful city.
Inverness is also renowned for its exquisite flowers. In fact, Bught Park, is a very popular attraction, especially the Floral Hall located there, which boasts a spectacular subtropical landscape. Throughout the summer months, Inverness is covered with colourful flowers and a favourite pastime is strolling along the flower strewn riverside, from which one can see the stunning Ness Islands.
The city is also home to a very good museum and art gallery, and offers some excellent shopping in a selection of malls. There's also an indoor Victorian market on Academy Street that is worth visiting to pick up gifts and souvenirs.
Just outside Inverness you can visit Nairn, a little resort on the Moray Firth, which is home to beautiful long white sand beaches as well as a championship golf course. Nearby you'll find Cawdor Castle, the setting for Shakepeare's Macbeth, as well as Fort George, a defensive structure built around 1745. It's one of the best military fortifications to be found in Europe, and is well worth exploring. Believe it or not, it's still a working garrison to this day.
